 back

20-Feb-2021

If you haven't heard of the ABC Radio National program Sporty before, it's a weekly half-hour that looks at the stories behind sports headlines.  It is also about health, wellness and fitness, presented by Amanda Smith.

Pickleball featured on Sporty in February in the "Lost cricket pitches, and Pickleball" episode, which Amanda had a go at in between Lockdowns in Victoria. See episode summary below.

Lost cricket pitches, and Pickleball

Lost cricket pitches of W.A

It's an interesting pastime for a sports lover and amateur historian: Les Everett travels around Western Australia looking for abandoned cricket pitches. Some are now hidden in bushland, others are in the middle of wheatfields. The photographs he takes of them conjure the memory of summers long past.

Pickleball

Has the Australian Open inspired you to get your racquet out and head to the tennis court? If you haven't played for a while - or you just want to try something a bit different but that involves similar skills - maybe you should try pickleball. It's claimed to be the world's fastest growing sport. But where does the name come from?

Guests:

Les Everett

Aaron Blitz, Bill Beckwith, Lucy Mahony, Mat Monty, Lottie Nord-White, Elise Sanderson, Bruce Hesketh, Bill Hegarty - pickleball players

Duration: 29min 3sec
Broadcast: Sat 20 Feb 2021, 10:30am
