The Pickleball Australia (PA) Officiating Program has been designed to ensure that Australia has skilled referees at all levels available for sanctioned and recognised events across Australia. Our officiating program has been developed in line with the rules and regulations of the current Global Pickleball Federation rules book.

Courses have both online and in person components and offer flexibility to ensure that everyone across our nation can become a PA qualified referee. To become a PA qualified referee, click on one of the courses below or contact us via the link at the bottom of the page.

If you are a tournament organiser or club interested in hosting an officiating course, please click on the link below to start the process. Preference is given to venues who are hosting an event so the practicable component can be completed at the same time.

Why I became a Pickleball Australia referee - Paul Campbell.

I have been playing pickleball for approximately 2.5 years.  In that time I have embraced the game, some would say I’m addicted.  I am a certified IPTPA Level 1 Pickleball Coach and a PAA Level 2 Official (referee).

I am not one to casually sit around at tournaments waiting for my event to commence or casually watch others play.  While it’s great being supportive of friends I would rather be active.  Becoming a referee was a way of giving back to pickleball.  All sports need referees and pickleball tournaments cannot run successfully without them.  Referees help tournaments run smoothly, adjudicate disputes and ensure good sportsmanship of all players.

Being a referee gives me the opportunity to educate and assist others who are new to the game, need rules explained or help interpretate rules. Becoming a referee has helped me improve my own game as referees are expected to have an understanding of all the rules, so at times, I have read and researched certain sections of the Official Rule Book to ensure I (and now, others) comply with all rules.

Referees get to know players at all levels from across Australia which is another social benefit to pickleball.  From being a player at club level (assisting players and explaining rules) to refereeing national championship finals it is great being part of the pickleball community.  It is an additional element to my love of the game. It allows me to give back to the sport and assist others to also develop their love of pickleball.
