Vale - Sandra Canniff
A profoundly valuable and influential figure of Pickleball NSW (PANSW), Sandra Canniff, passed away earlier this week at her home in Seven Hills, Western Sydney at the age of 73.
As founding member and secretary of PANSW, Sandra’s dedication and passion for pickleball were evident from the outset. It was clear that Sandra believed in not only playing the sport but getting involved to make sure others would have the opportunity to love the game as she did.
November 2020 saw Sandra step into the role of PANSW President where her energy and drive ensured the sport continued to grow and flourish. This included opportunities for social and competitive play, development of policies and frameworks including establishment of the NSW Ambassador program to support regional development, leading by example as a tournament director and referee, and involvement in committees and events at club level.
Sandra recognised the value of volunteers and fostered a strong spirit of volunteerism throughout the organisation.
Sandra’s love for the inclusive nature of pickleball saw her become a driving force behind wheelchair pickleball, pickleball for the deaf and hard of hearing, and establish a strong relationship with the Special Olympic Committee.
Sandra stepped down as PANSW President in November 2024 feeling confident that the new committee were ready to surge forward. She was looking forward to getting more involved at the local level and her commitment to pickleball was unwavering.
Sandra leaves behind an enduring legacy that will be remembered by all who knew her, as will her unwavering dedication to the sport. Sandra’s impact on the pickleball community will be felt for years to come.
We extend our deepest sympathies to Sandra's family and friends during this time of loss. Let us honour her memory by embodying the dedication and passion she had for this game and the pickleball community.
